What a Great Hair Consultation Should Actually Look Like
What a Great Hair Consultation Should Actually Look Like
A hair consultation shouldn't be five minutes of:
“What are we doing today?”
“Same thing?”
“Yep.”
And then straight to the shampoo bowl.
Your consultation is one of the most important parts of your appointment.
Because before we can create great hair, we need to understand what you're actually asking for.
Start With What You Want to Change
Sometimes clients come in saying:
“I don't know what I want. I just hate my hair.”
That's okay.
You don't need to know the technical terminology.
That's our job.
Instead, tell us what isn't working.
Is it:
Too dark?
Too warm?
Too flat?
Too much bulk?
Too fine?
Too difficult to style?
Too much maintenance?
Not enough movement?
Too much gray showing?
Those answers tell us much more than a haircut name or color number.
Then We Look at Your Hair
Before deciding what to do, we need to understand what we're working with.
That means looking at:
Your natural color
Previous color
Texture
Density
Condition
Growth patterns
Existing haircut
Previous chemical services
Your hair history matters.
If you've had box color, old highlights, permanent color, vivid color or multiple chemical services, we need to know.
Even if it was six months ago.
Especially if it was six months ago.
We Talk About Maintenance
This is one of the conversations that gets skipped too often.
A color can look incredible.
But if it requires an appointment every four weeks and you only want to visit the salon every four months, that's not necessarily the right color for you.
A good stylist should tell you that.
We should be talking about:
How often you want to come in
How much time you spend styling
What you're willing to maintain at home
Your budget
Your realistic appointment schedule
The goal is to create something you can actually maintain.
Inspiration Photos Are Helpful
Bring them.
We love them.
But we're going to look at them differently than you might.
We're asking:
What do you like about this photo?
Maybe it's the brightness.
Maybe it's the haircut.
Maybe it's the softness around the face.
Maybe it's the dimension.
Maybe it's simply the overall feeling.
Our job is to translate that inspiration into something that works with your actual hair.
Sometimes the Answer Is “Not Today”
This is one of the most important things a stylist can tell you.
If your hair isn't healthy enough for the service you're requesting, we may recommend a different approach.
If your previous color makes your goal unrealistic in one appointment, we'll tell you.
If a haircut isn't going to work with your texture or lifestyle, we'll talk about alternatives.
That's not your stylist saying no.
That's your stylist protecting your hair and helping you create a better long-term result.
The Consultation Should Feel Like a Conversation
You shouldn't feel like you need to walk into the salon knowing exactly what formula, technique or haircut you want.
You should feel comfortable saying:
“I don't know what I need. Help me.”
That's exactly what a consultation is for.
At Moxxi Grey Salon
Our philosophy is simple:
Listen first. Then create.
We want to understand your hair, your goals and your lifestyle before deciding what technique makes sense.
Because great hair isn't about doing the most complicated service.
It's about doing the right service for you.
And sometimes the best thing a stylist can give you isn't another trend.
It's an honest answer.
